Sometimes children and adults start out wanting to train in martial arts because of the exciting and unbelievable things they see done in the movies. Although some may not attain the skill level of some of their martial arts heroes, it is important to realize that the basic foundation of martial arts has nothing to do with what you see in the movies.

In fact, the true purpose of martial arts is to promote non-violent conflict resolution and a sense of self. Studies have shown that today's martial arts students get better grades, get in less trouble, and are more motivated than non-martial artists. Our school can make a positive difference in your life, because we teach more than just self-defense:

  • Martial arts training develops cardiovascular fitness as well as muscular strength. Our students enjoy a greater sense of balance and focus.

  • Our students learn to improve their hand to eye coordination, which can be of great benefit in other activities.

  • Martial arts is a regimented environment instilling a deep work ethic and a heightened sense of discipline.

  • Our school promotes teamwork while emphasizing students' individual achievements.

  • Unlike other activities, there is never any pressure to achieve a certain level. Everyone works to his or her own potential.

  • Development of self is our key motivation.

OUR STYLES

TANG SOO DO

Literally translated, the word TANG means T'ang Dynasty of China which reflects the shared cultural background between China and Korea. SOO means hand, but it implies fist, punch, strike or defense. DO means way of life or arts. Thus, Tang Soo Do means the Korean classical martial art which was influenced by the T'ang method of martial art. The final translations can be put together as the rather poetic-WAY OF THE CHINA HAND or "art of the knife hand". Tang Soo Do is both a 'hard' and 'soft' style of martial art, with the hard external influence coming from the Soo Bahk and the soft internal from the Northern Chinese systems. Both of which can easily be recognized in the Hyungs (forms) that are practiced within the style. The purpose of Tang Soo Do training is not for fighting, but to perfect techniques which will enhance your total self. If the occasion arises when you must defend yourself, of equal importance is the development of the proper spirit to supplement the physical skills which are attained. Tang Soo Do is a classical martial art and it's purpose is to develop every aspect of the 'self' in order to produce mature persons who can totally integrate their intellect, emotions, body and spirit.
